Is Developmental Editing Worth the Investment?

Ghostwriter and Developmental Editor Katie Ludlow Rich

An acquaintance reached out about developmental editing for their memoir and was taken aback when they heard my pricing.

I was surprised at first because I am transparent about my pricing on my website, though they may not have looked at that before contacting me.

But the more I thought about it, the more I understood their reaction.

They had worked hard on their manuscript for years. They had reached a point of exhaustion and felt stuck about what to do next. And they probably felt vulnerable reaching out for help.

The thing is that I really could help this person. It was the kind of nonfiction book that is right in my wheelhouse.

What is developmental editing?

Developmental editing means digging deeply into a manuscript, identifying its strengths and weaknesses, and offering targeted feedback that can take the book to the next level. I spend hours reading and analyzing the work, prepare a detailed editorial letter, and meet with the writer to answer questions and help them determine their next steps.

This is not a casual favor. It is professional support for writers who are serious about finishing a strong book.

Is developmental editing worth the cost?

Investing in editing can feel intimidating, especially when you have already poured years of effort into your writing. It can also be difficult to trust that your words and goals are worth the cost.

But when you have reached the point where you know your manuscript needs something and you can no longer see clearly what that is, developmental editing may be the right next step. Sometimes an experienced outside perspective finally helps you get the book across the finish line.

If that sounds like where you are with your manuscript, I would love to help you finish your book. Check out my offerings and reach out to get on my project schedule.
